WHY DOES KEN FISHER HATE ANNUITIES?
According to his literature, Ken Fisher hates annuities for several valid reasons:
- They can be complicated to understand
- There can be high fees (especially with variable annuities)
- There is usually a commission involved
- They are not always the best option for the client
These are all understandable reasons to hate annuities. Some financial advisors really dislike annuities and cash value life insurance because from what they see:
- The owner doesn't really understand what they have
- It wasn't offered in the best interest of the client
- They can do a better job managing your money
Why Ken Fisher really LOVES Annuities
That said, perhaps Ken Fisher doesn't really hate annuities - maybe he actually loves them! You could say that a dentist hates cavities, but from a business standpoint, he makes a living off of them. In a way, a dentist has to love cavities.
Fisher Investments manages $65 billion in investments. Annuity evaluations and surrenders is a large part of their strategy to get more assets under management. (They offer to pay surrender fees so that they can manage your money instead. Of course in the long run, they stand to profit from the fees you will pay them.)
Who should you listen to when it comes to annuities?
When considering whether an annuity is right for you, you have to consider the source of information.
If you are talking with someone who only offers annuities, they clearly have a conflict of interest. If you meet with some whose firm never offers annuities, that too is a sign of a bias.
That means that sometimes an annuity might be a good solution. It might mean that investment advice and management might be a good solution. Or maybe both.
